cedar and pigment, 10 x 2 x 1.75 in (25.4 x 5.1 x 4.4 cm) inscribed in graphite in an unknown hand, "cme [?]/ [$]3.00".

Provenance
With the Nugget Shop, Alaska, their black ink stamp verso;Private Collection, Calgary.

James Rudolph was an accomplished Tlingit carver and painter who was especially prolific in the first quarter of the 20th century. Based in Juneau, Rudolph was from the Raven moiety and was commissioned to create the Thunderbird house screen for the Wooshkeetaan clan that is now in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Smith 2011, 203). Rudolph was known for creating model poles and his work was featured at an exhibition in Paris in 1931 (Alaska State Library – Historical Collections, ASL-P240-258) and sold through the historic Nugget Shop, whose stamp is featured on this pole.

This three-figure pole features a bear, raven, and human and is very similar to a model pole (Figure 47) in Carvings and Commerce: Model Totem Poles 1880-2010 (Hall and Glascock 2011, 90).
