Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $500**

North America, United States, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A fine military dress sword, model M1902, the steel blade is engraved with the recipient's name: "William L. Judson" and the ricasso is stamped "Sportsman US Army American Made" and on the opposite side is a 6-pointed star with "Proved." This type of saber was used by army and air force officers for drill commands, parades / ceremony, and was often received as a presentation gift for honors or distinction, and the blade is etched with the recipient's name and decorative emblems. The edge is dull and not intended for combat, and the matching sheath is included. Size: 38.5" L x 5" W (97.8 cm x 12.7 cm); blade Size: 32" L x 0.75" W (81.3 cm x 1.9 cm)

It is presumed that this sword belonged to William L. Judson (1842 to 1928), a famous painter connected with Southern California's Arts and Crafts Movement at the turn of the century. Judson immigrated to the United States with his family from England in 1852, and he served several years in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Afterwards he studied art in Europe and New York, and eventually settled in Los Angles in 1893, as a painter and art professor, and distinguished member of the Arroyo Guild of Craftsmen. Judson also founded the Los Angeles College of Fine Arts at his home and established a stained glass studio with his sons in 1897, Judson Studios. During his time in the Union army, he served as a private in Company C of the Twenty-first Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, moving through Illinois, Missouri, and Tennessee.

Provenance: private Plainfield, Illinois, USA collection, acquired May 22, 2016 from Ancestry Guns, Columbia, Missouri, USA
