Description
Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 760 to 30 BCE. An intriguing faience plaque of ovoid form featuring a seated illustration of Horus the child underneath a large, looming serpent as well as a sizable sun disc. The plaque is covered in layers of lustrous teal-hued glaze that are accentuated by areas of white glaze that have darkened with age, and above the composition is a pierced suspension tube. Plaque pendants like this example were typically intended as protective amulets worn by the owner. Size: 0.25" L x 1.16" W x 2.23" H (0.6 cm x 2.9 cm x 5.7 cm)

Exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from 1986 to 1991; in the University of Arizona Museum of Art, October 1993 to December 1993; and in the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA), California State University, San Bernardino from 1996 to 2023, reference number EL01.225.1996
