Description
**First Time At Auction**

Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period to Ptolemaic Period, 21st to 31st Dynasty, ca. 1070 to 30 BCE. A wearable necklace made up of tiny tubular and seed faience "mummy" beads in hues of black, deep brown, and pale blue with a faience Eye of Horus or wadjet amulet at the center. An ancient ocular symbol of protection, the wadjet is enveloped in vibrant sky-blue glaze while the pupil is delineated by a black glaze. Beads were often strung together to create intricate jewelry or collars that were placed on mummies or in temples as offerings; the organic threads disintegrate over the centuries, and upon modern discovery, these scattered beads are often collected and restrung into wearable jewelry. Size of necklace: 18" L (45.7 cm); amulet: 0.93" L x 0.68" W (2.4 cm x 1.7 cm)

Symbolic of health, healing, and protection, the wadjet is one of the oldest symbols in Egyptian writing. In ancient Egyptian mythos, the falcon god Horus controlled the skies, the sun, and the moon. The sun (represented as the right eye of Horus) rose each day and gave life-giving energy to the crops and gods alike; when the sun set, the moon (represented as the left eye of Horus) rose over the land and provided a guiding path to the afterlife for the recently deceased.
