Description
A Girlhood Silk on Linen Needlework Alphabet Sampler, Wrought by Mary Simpson, Dated 1814. Decorated with rows of upper and lowercase alphabets, numbers and crowns. Inscribed to the center "Mary Simpson her Sampler / December 24, 1814 / Aged 10 Years" above four lines of text inscribed "virtue the ornaments of human life, It crowns the virgins and adorns the wife. / Let Difficulties only animate your industry, / not deter you from its persuit.", within a geometric triangular border. In a burlwood frame. Together with a Berlin wool needlework sampler, dated 1876.
Dimensions: Sight 15 x 11 3/4in; Frame 18 1/4 x 14 3/4in and Sight 11 3/4 x 12in; Frame 16 x 16 1/4in.
Condition
Each needlework is framed and glazed. Neither have been examined out of the frames.
