Jacob Hostetter, Hanover, York County, PA Tall Case Clock. b. 1754, d. 1831. Chippendale walnut case with ogee-molded cornice having dentil molding, arched top sidelights and turned column supports. Cove-molded waist, shaped lip-molded pendulum door, chamfered corners and molded bracket base. 30-hour movement, hand-painted metal dial with date register. A pioneer clockmaker of York County, PA, he produced his first clock in 1798 after learning the trade from Richard Chester, the first clockmaker in Hanover. Jacob Hostetter was also a politician, a member of the state legislature and a member of congress (1818-1821). In 1825 he moved to Ohio and set up a clock making business with his son in the colony around New Lisbon. Information from "Pennsylvania Clocks and Clockmakers" by George H. Eckhardt. 88-1/2"h.
