Item Details
Description
Native American, Southwestern United States, Akimel O'odham (Pima) or Tohono O'odham (Papago), ca. 1890s to 1900s CE. A coiled cylindrical basket hand twined with natural plant fibers such as a willow, sumac, and/or devil's claw. This piece is missing the base, but the sides are well preserved with 3 repeating bird motifs - one with wings outstretched, perhaps an eagle, and above alternating between lighter and darker brown birds. The early O'odham baskets were primarily utilitarian and religious, and later were made as sale items. Size: 11" Diameter x 10" H (27.9 cm x 25.4 cm)
