Step into the world of maritime adventure with this captivating antique nautical chart of the Philippines, showcasing the renowned Manila galleons route. Created in 1749 by the English pirate (‘Baron’) George Anson, this copperplate engraved chart provides one of the best and most detailed maps of the country up to that point in history. The map depicts the route of the famous Spanish treasure ships known as the 'MANILA GALLEONS,' sailing from Acapulco to Manila. It features a large compass rose, and rhumb lines, and highlights the strategic importance of the Philippines during this era of seafaring exploration. Published as part of the French edition of 'Voyage Autour de Monde' in Amsterdam, this chart is a fascinating artifact from Anson's around-the-world voyage, which took place from 1740 to 1744. Anson's daring mission was to attack Spanish territories in western South America, intercept and plunder Spanish treasure galleons. The risks were immense, as capture by the Spanish would have led to charges of piracy and execution for him and his crew. Throughout his arduous journey, Anson faced tremendous challenges, losing two-thirds of his crew and three of his six ships. Only the flagship 'Centurion' and 125 crewmen remained when they eventually returned to England in 1744.
