Description
Iberian Peninsula, Spain, used in the colonial New Mexico or New Spain 16th-18th century probably in use during the Onate period (1590-1601), New Mexican and used by the Pueblo Indians. Featuring a long shaft with tacks and a socketed spear to the top which features a flat back side and raised central ridge to the center of a double edged blade. When the Spanish arrived in the region in the 16th century they brought with them their own weapons and military tactics, including the use of spears. The Spanish settlers, soldiers and missionaries used a variety of weapons including swords, muskets and spears as they interacted with the indigenous populations and established settlements.
