[CIVIL WAR]. Pair of medals presented to Lieutenant Charles W. Sy, including NY Faithful Service medal and pre-war gold regimental medal from the 8th NY National Guard.8th New York National Guard regimental medal, overall approx. 3 1/4 x 1 5/8 in. Gold and enamel two-part badge with tricolor ribbon-wrapped bar; pin to reverse (ribbon faded with some wear, minor surface wear to enamel, scratching to reverse and darkening to bottom gold piece). Pin hanger features ribbon bordered at top and bottom by two gold cylinders. Suspended badge obverse features enameled coat of arms separated into quadrants, with a red device at center reading "NG," all encircled by a blue enameled belt with legend "Pro Patria Et Gloria / 8" and jewel-encrusted buckle feature. Reverse engraved and stamped: "To / Lieut. Charles W. Sy / from the / Eighth National Guard / Oct 19th 1857." -- Long and Faithful Service medal, overall approx. 4 x 1 3/4 in. Bronze two-part badge with red ribbon; pin to reverse (some spotting to badge, some separation to right side of ribbon). Top bar reads "Pro Patria Et Gloria." Suspended cross and crossed cannons badge obverse features a large central numeral "7" encircled by text "Long and Faithful Service," all surrounded by a wreath. Reverse with Tiffany & Co. maker's mark and stamped number "325," along with centrally engraved presentation, "Lieut. Charles W. Sy / 1885." -- Together, 2 medals presented to Lieutenant Charles W. Sy for his military service extending from the pre-war to post-war eras. Though an HDS search returned no results for a Charles W. Sy, his name appears in some records including in the New York Adjutant General's report for the year 1857, in which he is listed as having been commissioned a second lieutenant of Company H, 3rd Brigade, 7th Regiment on 16 April 1851. His obituary in the New York daily newspaper, The Sun, dated 29 July 1886, mentions his work in the wholesale dry goods business and his prominence in the "Seventh Regiment." He is listed as having been a member of Atlantic Lodge, No. 172, F and A M; Jerusalem Chapter, No. 8, R.A.M.; Coeur de Leon Commandery, No. 23, K.T., and of Company H, 7th Regiment (Veterans).This lot is located in Cincinnati.
