HILDEBRAND, Samuel (1836-1872). Pre-Civil War manuscript bearing X-mark signature of the notorious Missouri "Bushwacker." 2 November 1857.One page, 7 7/8 x 7 1/4 in. Few creases at old folds, light discoloration, puncture to upper portion, wear to edges. Docketed verso. This document, with illiterate Samuel Hildebrand's "X" mark to lower right, authorizing the sale of his father's (George Hildebrand) farm land consisting of about 166 acres.One of Quantrill's Raiders, Samuel Hildebrand was known as a bushwhacker and a murderer who took revenge on his enemies during the Civil War by shooting or hanging them. He died while resisting arrest in 1872.
