Description
PAUL TIBBETS (1915 - 2008) American bomber pilot of the Enola Gay, which dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, August 6, 1945. Signed book, ‘509th Composite Group History’ (Columbus, Ohio: Mid Coast Marketing), 2002. Unpaginated, 4to. blue boards. Boldly signed in blue ink on the third flyleaf at the conclusion of a printed statement from Tibbets, indicating this copy is a reprint of the original souvenir service books given to members of the famous 509th Composite Air Group, a unit of the Army Air Forces created during World War II and tasked with the operational deployment of nuclear weapons. The unit conducted the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in August 1945, and was headed by Tibbets. The descriptive text is heavily illustrated with photos and other images, including facilities on Tinian, fliers at work and play, features on the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (‘Atomic Blitz’), photos of all air crews, including Enola Gay and Bocks Car, headquarters staff, ground and ordnance crews, etc. In fine condition.
