Item Details
Description
'Dave's Dream' (originally 'Big Stink') was a B-29 bomber which flew in the first B-29 daylight attack on Japan, and participated in the atomic bomb attack on Nagasaki, Japan on August 9, 1945. Assigned to the 393d Bomb Squadron, 509th Composite Group, it was used as a camera plane in support of the bomb-carrying B-29 Bockscar to photograph the explosion and effects of the bomb. The aircraft was also used during the first post-war dropping of an atomic bomb in the 'Able' test at Bikini Atoll, July 1, 1946. Rare collection of nine individual signatures of the 13 crewmen aboard 'Dave's Dream' when the aircraft dropped the first of the atomic bombs exploded during the July 1, 1946 'Able' tests at Bikini Atoll. The signatures, which appear to be contemporary, are executed on lined index cards and include: Pilot WOODROW P. SWANCUTT, Co-pilot WILLIAM C. HARRISON, Bombardier HAROLD H. WOOD, Navigator WILLIAM B. ADAMS, Radio Officer JACK W. CATHRAN, Radar Officer PAUL CHENCHAR, JR., Engineer ROBERT M. GLENN, Left Scanner HERBERT B. LYONS, and Right Scanner ROLAND M. MODLIN.
