ELIZABETH I - HERALDRY Illuminated Grant of Arms to John Westby of Westby in the County of York, granted by Lawrence Dalton, Norroy, principal Herald and King of Arms of the North East and West parts of England from the River Trent Northward, bearing historiated initial letter portrait of the crowned Herald wearing a tabard, and three decorative foliate borders, the left depicting arms blazoned in gilt and colours, upper border depicting the white rose of York and a Tudor rose within the ribbon of the Garter, a royal crown above, flanked by ribbons bearing the motto 'Fortune Tourneth – The While', on vellum, dust-staining, rubbed with some loss, creases, two pendant red wax seals, mounted, framed and glazed, unexamined out of frame, 330 x 590mm., with frame 610 x 810mm., 20 May 1560; with illuminated confirmation signed by Gregory King, Rouge Dragon, of the paternal arms and the lineage of John Westby, son of Thomas Westby of Moldbury '...since their coming into Lancashire they have matched with some of the chiefest families in that County...', margins ruled in red and bearing the Westby arms in gilt and colours, on vellum, dust-staining, creased and worn, holes and rust stains from pins where previously mounted, held by thread on a board, framed and glazed, 300 x 385mm., with frame, College of Arms, 16 February 1686; and illuminated coat of arms of the Westby family, bearing the Westby motto 'Nec Volenti Nec Volanti', pen, coloured inks and gilt on paper, some spotting, dust-staining and water damage to lower left corner, framed and glazed, unexamined out of frame, 240 x 190mm., with frame 415 x 365mm., [?late eighteenth/early nineteenth-century] (3) Footnotes: The Grant of Arms is described in detail in J.
