Description: A historical piece of ephemera documenting the sale of a twelve year old slave by the name of James, no last name was mentioned for the boy. The sale is between one John and Alfred Brown though it is signed by several others. Alfred Brown resided in Person Count North Carolina and we believe died just two years after this document was signed. â€œKnows all men by these presents that I John Brown of the County of Person and state of North Carolina hath bargained and sold an Alfred Brown of the County and Sate aforesaid one nigro boy by the name of James about twelve years of age which he that said Alfred Brown hath said to me in hand two hundred and seventy five dollars the deal I do hereby acknowledge hath granted given bargain. Sold and delivered unto the Alfred Brown the afore said nigro James and of myself my heirs administrators and all other persons against all sides or claims against the aforesaid nigro James to the sound Alfred Brown his heirs executors and administrators or again as witness my hand and seal The eleventh day of March one thousand eight hundred and thirteen.”The reverse side of the paper states â€œNorth Carolina Person County February term 1814 The executor of this bill of sale was acknowledged in open court. John Brown Bill of sale to Alfred Brown. Records in book No 6 page 201.
