Irvin McDowell (1818-1885) was a graduate of the United State Military Academy in 1838 and served as aide-de-camp to General John E. Wool during the Mexican-American War. He is remembered most for his defeat at the First Battle of Bull Run, the first large-scale battle of the Civil War. His Civil War tenure continued with ignominy, with failures against Stonewall Jackson's forces in the 1862 Valley Campaigns and contributing to the defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run.
