Autograph note signed by General James Harrison Wilson. N.p., 28 December 1865. 1 page, 12 x 15 1/2 inches framed. Handsomely matted and framed with an engraved portrait of Wilson. Wilson writes with great affection to a cousin, sending them "this little pressed rosebud from the Battlefield of Nashville." Though the flower is not included, the note itself is a sentimental war memento.
James Harrison "Harry" Wilson (1837-1925) was a topographic engineer and major general in the Union army. He served as an aide to General McClellan during the Maryland Campaign and later joined Grant in the Western Theater. He gained praise for his leadership during the Overland Campaign and when he returned west, he became one of the few commanders to defeat Nathan Bedford Forrest in battle at the Battle of Franklin and again during the 1865 raids in Alabama and Georgia. He gained most fame, however, when he and his men captured the fleeing Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Andersonville Prison commandant Henry Wirz.
