Autograph document. Orange County, New York, 26 May 1868. 1 page, 4to. Signed by Dumond by mark and Notary Public George H. Clark.
A scarce Civil War veteran document for a Black soldier. It is the testament of Hiram Dumond a resident of Newburgh, New York and a veteran of Company K, 20th United States Colored Troops (USCT), who "well knew William Crawford who served and died a Private in Co. "I" of said 20th U.S.C.T. Vols. That said Crawford was a well man when he joined said Regiment, But that he contracted, while in said service, and line of duty chronic Diarrhea + while at Camp Parapet Louisiana, was confined to his bed for two weeks or more + that he then and there died of said disease on the 10th day of July 1864." The document concludes: " That deponent lost a cousin who was a member of said regiment, that day and is confident said Crawford died July 10, 1864, and that he has no interest in the claim of the children of said deceased for a pension."
