President Millard Fillmore (13th U.S. President) Autograph Signed Letter, 1848. Letter handwritten and signed by Fillmore when serving as the N.Y. state comptroller (1847-1849). Fillmore left the comptroller's office to serve as Vice President under President Zachary Taylor, and ascended to the Presidency upon Taylor's death in July 1850. President Fillmore was the 13th president of the United States, serving from 1850 to 1853. Fillmore was instrumental in passing the Compromise of 1850, a bargain that led to a brief truce in the battle over the expansion of slavery.
