Description
Walter Feldman (1925-2017). "Quarry", 1949. Medium" oil on panel. Signed. Dimensions: 22" x 12 1/2". Unframed. Surface scratches (from multiple studio moves over the years). Early in the artist’s career small size canvases and panels provided Feldman the opportunity to work out ideas. Feldman had limited funds, was a student at Yale and needed to be sure before he invested in a larger canvas and more expensive art supplies. "Quarry" offers excellent insight into the young artist’s transition to modernist ideas. Here he is experimenting with a sharper line and visual illusion much akin to the Surrealists. Feldman's love of color continues. An unusual subject matter for the artist in the mid-century, it veers off of the Jewish Identity, biblical themes often painted in his post war work. Modernist ideas and progressive art thoughts became the fabric of Feldman's daily life. At Yale both Albers and De Kooning were big influences in his work. Based upon his artistic production and exhibition history Feldman evidences early in his career that he is a tireless painter & printmaker…. ambitious to seize a wide spectrum of opportunities. The early 50’s is a time of artistic evolution, experimentation and synthesis. He is showing dramatic changes from year to year, let alone with in a single year. Starting off as a firm realist painter at Yale, when he returned to school post WWII he witnessed radically new modernist movements. Here is a successful attempt during this time. Feldman came to Brown University in 1953 after getting an MFA from Yale and teaching there for 2 years. He won a Fulbright scholarship in 1957. His works have been included in one person and group exhibitions at major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Institute of Contemporary Art.Please note there are surface scratches on this work requiring attention. These scratches are the result of multiple studio moves by the artist since 1949.
