Description
This is a carved catlinite pipestone “T” pipe from the Northern Plains dating to circa 1900-1950’s from the Owen D. Mort, Jr. museum collection. The pipe bowl has a classic “T” pipe pattern with rectangular smoking end with a tapered body having a tall stove pipe bowl and tapered end with beveled octagon like carving with three cut sections atop and rounded bottom with cut slanted tip. The chambers are drilled and the pipe is made from Minnesota Catlinite pipestone with a dark red / maroon to speckled pink coloring. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame, including of Afghani artifacts. Measures 6 1/8”L by 2 7/8” by 1 1/8”.
