This is a fantastic 19th Century beaded Indian hide large pipe bag from the Sioux of the Northern Plains from the ex-Harrisburg Pennsylvania collection. The pipe bag has a large size with unusually large beadwork section comprised of sinew sewn Indian tanned hide and covered in period correct 1800's glass trade seed cen beads in a classic Sioux geometric pattern with Buffalo / Bison or Horse track design running up each outside edge. The beadwork is done along both sides and the outside as well as a small strip running up edge top section adn some beadwork framing the top section. There are several old Native American repairs ranging from sinew and Indian hide repairs to some trade thread repairs. The bottom edge has Indian tanned buckskin fringes secured with sinew. Most of the beadwork is present with some very slight loss. The top belt strap is still attached. Provenance: Collected by former Harrisburg, Pa., Mayor Stephen Reed from the University of Pennsylvania archives to be displayed in the Museum of the West housed by the Pennsylvania government. Eventually the items were "deaccessioned" or sold at auction in 2013 with this being one of those pieces. The has some stiffened hides with some old Native repairs but mainly is well kept. Measures overall 25"L with an additional 8" strap by about 7"W.
