Description
This is a fantastic set of beaded buffalo hide moccasins with hard soles from the Sioux Indians of South Dakota Territory, circa 1880-1890. The set is comprised of Indian brain-tanned buffalo / bison hide sinew sewn with parfleche rawhide hard soles and covered along the tops, sides and backs in geometric beadwork. The beadwork is sinew sewn and shows early trade seed beads with a greasy blue background and pattern in blue, red, corn yellow. The bottoms, done in hard parfleche, have a nice foot worn pattern being well kept. There is some slight bead loss on the set which exposes the period correct sinew sewing, but mostly the set has the original beadwork in tact. The tops have some slight stiffness but mostly are supple. The tongue is in tact and has green ocher mineral pigment paint on the end. The original Indian hide ties are still present on the medium ankle. Provenance: Dale Harrison collection. Each measures 11”L x 4.25”W x 3.25”H.*
