Item Details
Description
This is a phenomenal 19th Century, Southern Plains Mountain Lion hide bow case and quiver from the ex-Donald Spaulding collection. This early example is comprised of Indian tanned Mountain Lion hide being sewn with sinew and hide lacing. The piece shows a wide large shoulder strap which extends between the bow case and quiver with rectangular fringes hanging below with integral hand cut fringes. All the hides have remnants of the Mountain Lion fur still attached, a documented feature in quiver bow cases amongst the Comanche, Apache, Southern Cheyenne, and Ute. This example is very similar to the 19th Century Comanche Bow case and Quiver in Mountain Lion which shows the hair on hide, with very little embellishment from the Gary Shansby and Mike Walsh Collections sold by Hindman in September 2023 for $19,500 (w/ bp). There are a few old trade thread repairs as well as two later leather hide tie repairs at the shoulder to the bowcase / quiver connection. The hide shows significant age with some slight hide cracking, a few cracks through and hide stiffening. That being said the hide is not brittle and can be handled with some usability or softness to the hide. Truly amazing original patina and wear. Truly a fantastic Indian Wars era Southern Plains example, possibly from the Comanche who were known to have little embellishment on their war regalia. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Donald Spaulding (1926-2021), noted New York artist, known for his depictions of the American West, Native Americans and his illustrations of the Lone Ranger. Previously valued at over $9,500. The piece measures 39”L from the top of the strap to the bottom of the fringes by 44.5”W overall.*
