Description
The rare parfleche case with native tanned fringe and pigment decoration is attributed to the Jicarilla Apache. Cylindrical parfleche cases of this type served as a carrier for a man's ceremonial feathered headdress. The cover thong, sling, lacing and fringe are of Native tanned hide. The period of use is circa 1870. Parfleche envelopes and carrying cases were made by female tribe members.
The actual hard parfleche case measures approximately 3 inches across (not perfectly round) and 16 inches in length not counting the fringe. With fringe the overall length is approximately 24 inches.
