Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Southern Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A matching pair of framed textile fragments both woven from camelid wool (alpaca or llama) and brightly dyed. The deceased were often wrapped in layers of cloth- the precious fabrics conveyed the wealth and power of the person, and these textiles were likely preserved in burials. Ancient Peru has one of the richest weaving traditions in the world, garments were not only made from plant fibers such as cotton, but luxurious camelid wool that came from one of the four species (in order of wool quality and fineness) vicuna, guanacos, alpaca, or llama. As llamas and alpacas are domesticated from the wild vicuna and guanacos, they were more commonly used. Size of larger frame: 19.75" L x 15.25" W (50.2 cm x 38.7 cm); textile: 18" L x 13.5" W (45.7 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, excavated or purchased in Peru in the 1960s, thence by descent to present owners
