Description
Pre-Columbian Framed Chimu Textile Featuring Chimu Creator. Measures 21 x 8 inches. Each figure on the panel represents Nayalam the Creator, the primary deity of creation in Chimu lore. Standing upon pronged feet with a triangular body, arms held out to the sides, and wearing a drooping headdress atop a triangular head. Nayalam is also known as the “navigator” due to multiple depictions of the deity sitting inside reed boats while traversing Peru’s many waterways. This large fragment is mounted in a fabric lined frame. Provenance: Ex-Nancy Lassalle estate, NYC. She was a founding member of both the NY City Ballet and School of American Ballet boards & an avid collector of Pre-Columbian artifacts.
