Description
"The Heir" & "The Marriage" from "A Rake's Progress", part of a series of eight painted 1732–1734, then engraved in 1734 and published in print form in 1735. Closely copied, oil on canvas, unsigned, inscribed verso as property of Mrs. J.B. Stillson of Rochester, NY. In walnut molded frames with gilt liners, OS: 40 1/2" x 49"; SS: 35 1/2" x 44 1/2".The Rev. J. B. Stillson of Rochester , NY, was known as "The man who discovered Moody" during the Revivals of 1857. Dwight Lyman Moody (1837-1899), also known as D. L. Moody, was an American evangelist and publisher, who founded the Moody Church, Northfield School and Mount Hermon School in MA. The Moody Church, founded in 1864, is extant today in Chicago. The original paintings are in the collection of Sir John Soane's Museum in London, where they are normally on display for a short period each day.
