Item Details
Description
Native American, Northwestern United States, Columbia River Plateau region, Nez Perce, ca. 1920s CE. A large cornhusk bag finely woven or twined from hemp or cotton string with a cloth rim and hide drawstring strap. The natural and dyed cornhusks are embroidered over the surface in triangular shapes. The bucket shape is known as a "Sally bag," was used for gathering roots, medicinal plants, or other foodstuffs that were in season. The flexible baskets required a special full turn twining technique that almost died out in the 1970s. Bags woven from native hemp and cornhusk were sought after trade items in the Plateau trade network, and as time went on, these bags were created more ornately using many materials. Size: 14.5" L x 13" W (36.8 cm x 33 cm)
