1858 Receipt for "…Keeping Negro Women and Children"
ADS, 1p, measuring 8" x 3", no place, dated January 6, 1858. A signed document recording the receipt of payment from one Albert Ryland for the hiring of an enslaved woman and unspecified number of children for the previous year, 1857. Reading in part: "Rec'd… the sum of ninety five dollars (it) being for keeping a negro woman and children for the year 1857". Uneven margins along bottom edge, with general toning throughout and flattened fold at middle. Else, very good.
