A signed presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper to General Ulysses S. Grant: “Senate Chamber, Boston / June 9th 1868 To General U.S. Grant U.S.A. / from the Author / Wm Schouler / Late Adjt General of Massachusetts”. With Jesse R. Grant’s library stamp on the front pastedown. Green cloth stamped in gilt; lightly scuffed. Pages toned with scattered foxing. Housed in an attractive custom clamshell case.
Schouler was an American journalist, politician and Adjutant General of Massachusetts during the American Civil War. In 1861 a Massachusetts militia training camp was named for him, but later renamed for Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. He remained Adjutant General throughout all of the U.S. Civil War until 1867.
