Frank Gervasi (Italy / Texas, 1895-1986), "Sawtooth Mountain", oil on canvas

Provenance: A Dallas, Texas collection
Frank Gervasi immigrated to New York in 1908 from Palermo, Sicily. He served in the U.S.Army in World War I and lost his right arm following the Battle of Saint-Mihiel south of Verdun, France. After the war he was determined to continue his painting despite the loss of his dominant arm. Gervasi artist lived in New York for a number of years and later in Tudor City, Manhattan. He studied with master teachers George Luks, Robert Henri, Frank Dumont and others at the Art Students League of New York. He painted the Catskills, the Adirondaks, the city skyscrapers, as well as still life and watercolor pieces. In 1955 the "New York Times" featured a story and photograph of his painting, "Fire Escape." Gervasi was a member of National Academy of Design, Allied Artists of America and American Watercolor Society. The Abell-Hanger Foundation of Midland, Texas commissioned Frank Gervasi in the late 1950s to paint mural-size scenes of the Gomez Gas Field for its museum. After that project, Gervasi moved to Marfa,Texas, to paint the canyons and mountains of the Southwest including Davis Mountains and Sangre de Cristo Mountains, New Mexico.
