Item Details
Description
African Maasai Beaded Leather Cape, Tanzania, Mid-20th Century. This stunning Maasai Beaded Leather Cape, hailing from Tanzania and dating back to the mid-20th century, is a captivating testament to the vibrant culture and artistry of the Maasai people. Measuring 3'4'' x 2'2'' (102 x 66 cm), this leather cape was worn by a married Maasai woman and is adorned with a profusion of glass beads, tassels, and buttons. The Maasai people have a rich tradition of dressing according to age and gender groups. Young Maasai women typically wear leather skirts adorned with a multitude of necklaces. However, after marriage, they adopt more covering attire, such as this leather cape. What sets this cape apart is its intricate beadwork. The glass beads used in its decoration not only add color and vibrancy but also hold geographical significance. Tanzanian Maasai often showcase more ornate designs with a preference for blue and red beads, while still adhering to traditional hides. In contrast, Kenyan Maasai favor orange and light blue beads and tend to incorporate factory-made cloths into their attire.
