Description
**First Time At Auction**
Horn of Africa, Ethiopia, Central and Northern Highlands, Amhara or Tigrinya peoples, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A hand-built wood tryptic icon of the Virgin and Child flanked by 2 angels, all attached via nailed leather hinges and adorned in red, blue, white, peach, gold, and black pigments, as well as hardened paste forming elevated details. The Blessed Virgin Mary is shown crowned and seated at the center with Christ in her lap and a globus cruciger in her right hand as 2 angels surround the pair, 1 on each panel facing inward. Amharic script embellishes the area below Mary and on the sides of her sloped shoulders. Size (when open): 14" W x 13.1" H (35.6 cm x 33.3 cm); (when closed): 7" W x 13.1" H (17.8 cm x 33.3 cm)

Condition
Right panel detached. Tearing to lower hinge of left panel. Chipping with some minor losses to peripheries. Nicks, abrasions, and stable fissures throughout. Nice remains of pigment and paste decoration. Great patina overall.
