Description

Mai Long (Vietnamese, born 1930) Hmong woman 1994 signed and dated MAI LONG 94 (lower left) pastel on paper 76 x 52 cm (29 7/8 x 20 4/8 in) Footnotes: Provenance Collection of Robin Markbreiter, HK Mai Long 赫蒙族女人 粉彩 紙本 1994年作 簽名:MAI LONG 94(左下) 來源 麥羅賓先生收藏,香港 Mai Long was born in 1930 in Haiphong, attended the Resistance Class (Khao Khang Chien) during the First Indochina War, which was organised by the pioneering artist To Ngoc Van. The students of the Resistance Class resided in Dao ethnic villages in Tuyen Quang province. However, due to frequent French attacks, the school had no fixed location for security reasons, which necessitated the students to be constantly on the move. The school was founded upon a philosophy that merged education with community service, including tending the gardens and cultivating crops. In the challenging environment with limited resources, students in the Resistance Class often had to resort to painting on recycled newspapers, using only watercolors and gouache as their available mediums. In 1955, Mai Long met Nguyen Phan Chanh, considered the father of modern Vietnamese silk painting. Fascinated by his work, Mai Long discovered the potential of silk as a new artistic medium and began to create with silk painting. As a child, Mai Long developed a deep appreciation for nature and was fascinated by the atmospheric effects of wind, rain, fog, water and sun. As a young adult, he spent numerous years in border provinces alongside diverse ethnic groups, cementing an enduring connection. From these life experiences, two themes emerged as dominant forces in his work: atmospheric metamorphosis and ethnic minorities.
