Description
**Originally Listed At $750**

Ancient Near East, Syria, ca. late 3rd to early 2nd millennium BCE. An intriguing terracotta idol with a roughly triangular body, rounded peripheries, and a pair of pierced 'eyes' surrounded by thinly incised curvilinear striations. Scholars posit that idols like this example were used in the process of twining fibrous strands together to create workable material. Size: 3.875" W x 3.7" H (9.8 cm x 9.4 cm); 6.2" H (15.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Cf. similar objects, identified as twining pieces, in Fortin, Michel. "Syria: Land of Civilizations." Quebec, 1994, p. 183, no. 124.

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
