Description
Canadian. Picton, Ontario. Salt-glazed stoneware. A five-gallon straight-sided storage crock with lug handles decorated with a large and well-executed flower and a stylized number "5" in cobalt blue. The crock is stamped with "S. Skinner & Co Picton C.W." Samuel Skinner was the second in a succession of potters to operate the business in Picton in Prince Edward County originally founded by William Hart in 1849. Stamped, "S.Skinner & Co / Picton C.W. / 5." 13.5" x 12.25". From the Leigh Moore and late Wendy Daxon Collection.
Condition
A large through crack that has been filled with epoxy travels horizontally for 18" just above the base and beneath the decoration. The crack is intersected by another that runs down and through the base and intersects with a third crack. Towards the back behind the left handle, a through crack runs vertically from just beneath the rim to the base. Another vertical crack runs from the rim and terminates at the handle on the right side. Several small chips and glaze flakes can be seen in the lower quarter of the crock.
