Description
Canadian. Picton, Ontario. Salt-glazed stoneware. A beautifully formed and decorated 4-gallon jug attributed to Samuel Skinner of the Picton Pottery. The jug features an elaborate cobalt blue bird decoration typical of Skinner's work along with a stylized "4". The jug was made for Archibald Livingston, a grocer, wine and spirit merchant whose business was located at the corner of Princess & Bacon Streets in Kingston. Stamped, "A. Livingston, / Wine & Spirit Merchant, / Princess Street / Kingston, C.W." 17" x 11".
Condition
A couple of small chips exist at the base and a larger chip measuring 3/4" x 1" can be seen on the right side of the lip. A potstone and a couple of glaze rubs are evident on the left side lower portion of the jug and a blob of glaze located in the same area adds a little character. Overall, a well-preserved example of this potter's fine workmanship.
