Description
WEST VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JUG, salt-glazed, designated two-gallon capacity, semi-ovoid form with ringed mouth, and strap handle. Stenciled cobalt "P. WELTY & CO. / WINES / & / LIQUORS. / No. 1118 MAIN STREET, / WHEELING. / W. VA.", additional stenciled ornaments to either side of "2", a wavy brushed stripe above, a simple stripe at base, and additional brushed cobalt encircling top handle terminal. Circa 1887. 14 7/8" HOA.

Catalogue Note: Peter Welty and Company was in the wholesale liquor business in Wheeling from 1885 to 1914. At one time is was the largest wholesale liquor house in the state. The company relocated to Pittsburgh in anticipation of the passage of West Virginia's prohibition act in July 1914. By 1918, the company was out business entirely due to the passage of national prohibition.
