Ancient Egypt, Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, ca. 1991 to 1802 BCE. A hand-carved steatite scarab of petite size. The topside displays stylized insectile features, and the bottom is inscribed with a series of hieroglyphs - some mirrored on each side - that perhaps acted as a protective talisman for its owner at one time.
