Description
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD, SHUIU SMOLENSKAYA, NORTH RUSSIA, 18TH CENTURY, the double kovcheg centering Mary holding the Christ child and wearing elaborately "jeweled" robes, painted in egg tempera colors on board. 12 1/2" x 11" Provenance: Estate of Robert William Guynn, Houston, Texas.
Condition
Craqueleur, areas of overpainting, edge wear, surface buildup, sides have numerous small nail holes - probably from an oklad now lost. The board is naturally curved and the back has two cut channel grooves for the slats but is lacking one.
