Description
PIETRO RUGA (c.1772-1850) A ROMAN REPUBLIC ERA MAP, "Planta topografica della città di Roma dell' anno 1849," ITALIAN, 1849, copperplate engraving on cream wove paper, sold in Rome by Nicola de Antoni in the Spanish Piazza, no. 84 (eg. stall), surrounded by a three-quarter border of important architectural floor plans, the map likely for travelers on "The Grand Tour," but during this tumultuous time in Rome's history it is unlikely that was its only potential use; 25 3/4" x 33", framed 31" x 38 1/4". Provenance: Collection of Brent Bell, Houston, Texas.
Condition
Dissected and mounted to linen, stains, paper cockling/handling, apparent age and toning throughout. Somewhat of a "rushed" appearance to the date is similar to Yale's example held in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, id. no. 15493205. Statements by Simpson Galleries regarding the condition of objects are for guidance only and should not be relied upon as statements of fact and do not constitute a representation, warranty, or assumption of liability by Simpson Galleries. All lots offered are sold "AS IS."
