Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, late Edo period (1603-1868). An impressively long and finely painted scroll. The imagery presents with fluid, sparse brushwork characteristic of painters in the late Edo period (1603-1868) conjuring various schools such as the Maruyama-Shijo, Fukko-yamatoe, and Sumiyoshi. Numerous cartouches composed of gold leaf (kirikane) feature the inscribed names of warriors. Some of the personages on these cartouches include Mashita Nagamori (1545-1615), Hosokawa Tadaoki (1563-1646), Shimazu Yoshihiro (1535-1619), and Ishida Mitsunari (1559-1600) - all samurai warriors who fought in the Battle of Skihahara, the decisive conflict that determined the outcome of civil wars which led to the establishment of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1600. Size: 492" L x 10.5" W (1249.7 cm x 26.7 cm)

Provenance: private Pasadena, California, USA collection; ex-private estate collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, formed between 1970 and 2000

#180955
Condition
Expected age wear with normal crease marks, some staining, and tears/losses (most to peripheries but also a few inactive insect holes to the body of the work). Some fading, toning, staining, and tears/losses to the mounting/backing paper as shown. This said, the painted iconography is still vivid and the scroll is impressively long - approximately 41 feet.
