Catalogue Note: Born in Ontario, Canada, Ralston Crawford (1906-1978) came to the United States as a toddler in 1910 when his family settled in Buffalo, New York. A promising young artist, Crawford studied at the Otis Institute in Los Angeles, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and the Barnes Foundation in Pennsylvania, at the Academie Colarossi in Paris, and at Columbia University in New York. In the mid 1930s, Crawford started to draw attention for his Precisionist depictions of industrial landscapes. After serving with the weather division of the military during World War II, Crawford continued his work as an artist and educator, teaching in nearly a dozen universities over the remaining decades of his life. Interestingly, in 1927, he worked briefly at the Walt Disney Studios and, later, was witness, as an "art observer", to the Bikini Atoll atomic bomb tests in the 1950s.
"Grey Street" is a quintessential example of his work - a stark depiction of the mid 20th century American landscape in a Minimalist style. The effect of which is subtle, imparting a mood of emptiness and isolation without any overt sense of fear or melancholy.
