Japanese Porcelain Gull Form Dish by Makuzo Kozan, probably dating to 1910-5, was made during the latter years of the artist lifetime (Japanese 1842-1916) . An Imperial Court Artist, he was known for his porcelains that are in many collections including the British Museum. The dish, probably created as an ash container, takes the molded form of a sea gull with wings outstretched. Delicate colors of blue, pink, black, and white detail the wings and head of the gull. The base bears the mark Makuzu. Provenance: Perry Foundation. Exhibited: "Bridging East and West, Japanese Ceramics from The Kozan Studio," Baltimore, Walters Art Gallery, December 1994-April 1995, traveling to the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, England, 1996.
