Description
Antique German Art Nouveau porcelain bowl, marked by Zeh & Scherzer Porcelain Company, hand painted and artist signed "Lelong," marked with the green porcelain mark 'Empire Z.S.& CO. Bavaria' which was in use between 1882 and 1918. The additional stamp "Royal Munich. Hand Painted" refers to the design pattern.
This bowl is 10" [25.4cm] across and 2.1/2" [6.4cm] deep; no chips, no hairlines, very little surface wear, very good condition.
The company 'Zeh, Scherzer & Co.' was founded in 1880 and started to manufacture a wide range of products including coffee and tea sets, normal household items and tableware as well as decoration porcelain. Being very successful in decoration porcelain, the company opened its own art department in 1908 and next to many other famous designers also Professor Fritz Klee was employed as advisor. The design department and the art department had started to work together closely, exchanging ideas and successfully integrating art elements in normal household products. With such collaboration of trained designers and artists, the separate design department itself was no longer necessary and was slowly disbanded from 1919 onwards. Some collectors like to point out that this was the greatest period of the company, resulting in some of the most beautiful pieces produced. The resulting products were quite spectacular and even today remain a valuable addition to any Art Nouveau collection.
