Description
The map refers to and shows the theatre/theater of the French and Indian War. It covers much of New England and the Northern Colonies, including upstate New York, and part of the St Lawrence. Printed to inform the British public of the progress of the French & Indian War. At a time when news from the American Colonies travelled slowly, the earliest graphical information available to the British public was usually that printed in periodicals. The map extends from Lake Ontario and Fort Ontario to western Nova Scotia, centered on Lake Champlain and the Iroquois Country. It includes notes on the Treaty of Utrecht and other boundaries, along with the various forts south east of the St. Lawrence River, including Presentation Fort, Fort Oswego, Fort Ontario, Fort St. John, Fort Lewis, Fort Chambli, Fort Fredrick at Crown Point, Fort William Henry, Fort Hunless, Shirley Fort, Sheldon's Fort, Shank's Fort, Fort Dummer, No. 4 or Stephen's Fort, Fort Halifax, Frank Fort, Fort Western, etc. Boston Harbor/harbour is shown. One of the first seat of war maps to illustrate the battles in North America.
