A signed print of Arthur Szyk's "Visual History of Nations, The United States of America." Measuring 7.5" x 9" (sight), N.p., n.d. The original artwork was created in New York, 1945. Signed "Arthur Szyk" at the lower right corner. A visual history of America, with various patriotic scenes including a bald eagle and 48 white stars representing the 48 states then in the United States (Alaska and Hawaii achieved statehood after Szyk’s painting was completed). There are also numerous images with reference to the United States’ natural resources and to its citizens. The print has been matted and framed to the overall size of 12.75" x 15.75". Very fine with a bold signature. Housed in an attractive, gold frame.

In contrast to Szyk’s typical portraiture in the Visual History series, there are no faces of famous scientists, artists, or politicians in his United States print. Szyk chose instead to highlight the everyday man: farmers, industrial workers, Native Americans, and military personnel.

Arthur Szyk (1894-1951) was a talented illustrator who settled permanently in the United States after 1940. He used his technical knowledge of medieval and Renaissance book illumination to create intricate drawings and illustrations commenting on history, spiritual life, and modern politics. Szyk became one of the most important political cartoonists of World War II, and his drawings were published in major magazines and five times made the cover of "Time."
