Description
THURBER, JAMES. 1894-1961. Typed Letter Signed ('James Thurber'), to 'Boys and Girls of Class 5-1,' 1 p, 4to, West Cornwall, CT, May 2, 1960, responding to a group of letters from students. Light browning and spotting, fold creases. Matted and framed, not examined out of frame. Thurber writes collectively to a group of students, apologizing that he cannot respond to each of their letters individually. 'To the young lady that believes 'Everybody wants to keep hold of freedom' may I say that I think she is afflicted by one of our great national ailments, the belief that freedom can be put up on the mantelpiece or in the attic and that it will stay there. Too many people leave it lying around instead of holding onto it, so the nearest dictator or demagogue can pick it up when the boys are on the playing field and the girls are at the hairdressers.'
