SEM (GEORGES GOURSAT). 1863-1934. Portrait of William Makepeace Thackeray. Watercolor, pen and ink on paper, 210 x 145 mm, signed ('SEM') at lower right corner, light foxing. Framed. Amusing portrait of Thackeray, Dickens's literary rival. The two men both began as journalists, with Dickens achieving stardom first. They were cordial, if not friendly, until 1858, when tensions erupted into a bitter feud over events surrounding Dickens's divorce. Goursat was a popular French caricaturist during the Belle Epoque.
